BOGOTA RADISSON ROYAL HOTEL GETS GLOBAL GREEN KEY CERTIFICATION

The Radisson Royal Bogota Hotel became the first hotel in Colombia and the Andean region to be certified by Green Key Global, a program designed to certify hotels and resorts based on their commitment to sustainable development. Based on the results of a thorough audit, hotels are classified on a scale from 1 to 5 "Green Keys" and at the same time are guided in the implementation of practices to reduce the environmental impact of their operations. The hotel excelled in different areas of the assessment covered by the program, such as corporate environmental management, housing, food and beverage services, conference and meeting services and maintenance and engineering.It is for this reason that it was awarded "4 Green Keys.”

Angela Maria Gomez, the hotel`s general manager, says:  that the participation and enthusiasm not only of the employees but also of the guests and providers of this task is what has made the endeavor a complete success. This process has been strenuous, intense and time consuming; however, it has allowed us to reach a 10% reduction rate in the consumption of electric energy, a 9% reduction rate in the consumption of water, and a 40% reduction in the production of contaminated residues. In the next two years we plan on save an additional 15% on energy through the implementation of efficient energy use and the construction of solar panels which will heat about 70% of our water. Additionally we plan on saving an extra 20% on water consumption by changing the shower heads to water-saving shower heads in all of the guest bathrooms.   

However, it is not just the Hotel´s responsibility to execute proper environmental practices; we have found that our guest´s also feel the responsibility to help our environment.  Angela Maria says that “they have the option of reducing the impact of their travels on the environment by concrete actions like saving water through the omission of washing towels and sheets daily (the money saved is donated to a foundation that helps undernourished and underprivileged children), efficient energy use, water consumption, and recycling.
